  1. Recurrent Energy Begins Operations of 60 MW Barren Ridge Solar Project

By Editors of Power Engineering Canadian Solar Inc . and its subsidiary, Recurrent Energy , announced the commercial operations of the 60 MW Barren Ridge solar project . The development now supplies electricity and associated renewable energy credits to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power under a long-term purchase agreement. “This is the Company’s third U.S. solar project to reach commercial operation this year, a milestone that would not be possible without the hard work and collaboration with our partners,” said Shawn Qu, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Canadian Solar. LADWP will use the electricity to power 25,000 homes in Los Angeles. The utility was recently named among the top 10 utilities providing the most solar-generated megawatts to power grids in 2015. “We are committed to reaching 50 percent renewables by 2030, and this solar project plays an important role in reaching that goal,” said LADWP Executive Director of Power System Michael Webster. “In addition, large-scale transmission line projects like our Barren Ridge Renewable Transmission Project facilitates a renewable energy hub that brings a thousand megawatts of wind and solar energy into the city of Los Angeles.” The Barren Ridge solar project, located in Kern County northwest of Los Angeles, broke ground in 2015 and employed 230 builders at its peak. Recurrent also constructed two miles of generation transmission lines to connect the project to LADWP’s Barren Ridge Switching Station. A video of construction can be seen here. Last week, Recurrent announced commercial operation of the 200-MW Tranquility solar power project, also in California.
