  1. Study: Shale oil and gas sector could bring 65,000 jobs to Ohio

A new study suggests that shale oil and gas exploration in Ohio could prove to be a dramatic boon to the state's struggling economy, according to The Associated Press. Put together by a group of experts from Cleveland State University, Ohio State University and Marietta College at the behest of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, the study projects that the economic impact of the industry could grow exponentially in coming years. In 2012, oil and gas development could contribute $1.7 billion to the state's economy, but that number could more than triple to $5.8 billion in 2013 and nearly double again the next year to around $10 billion. By then, the industry could support as many as 65,000 jobs, either directly or through spending from employees. The benefits for the state are expected to ramp up quickly as well, growing from around $16.5 million last year to more than $433 million in 2014. The Columbus Dispatch notes that the estimates from this study are more conservative than one other recent industry study, which projected around 200,000 jobs gained, but more optimistic than another estimate from an Ohio State University professor who suggested one-tenth that number.
