  1. Inclement weather delays Lambouka-1 drilling in the Mediterranean Sea

By Phaedra Friend Troy ADX reported that drilling progress on the Lambouka-1 exploration well  in the Mediterranean Sea  was delayed due to adverse weather. Progress on the Lambouka-1 well was delayed some 53 hours due to bad weather, which prevented the installation of the subsea blowout preventer (BOP). More delays were experienced when the Southern Cross semisubmersible drilling rig attempted to latch the BOP to the wellhead on the seafloor. Modifications to the BOP/wellhead connection were required, and the BOP had to be reinstalled and pressure tested. Furthermore, a rig power supply issue caused a delay in late July. Drilling on the Lambouka-1 exploration well did not commence until close to the end of Aug. 2, 2010. During repair work, a zero rig rate is incurred by ADX and its partners; and during the wait on the weather, a significantly reduced rig rate applies. Drilling Ahead This week, the rig is expected to continue drilling 16’’ hole to approximately 1,340 meters measured depth, and run and cement 13 3/8” casing. The rig is then expected to drill 121/4” hole to predicted base of Birsa Sandstone. Drilling and evaluation of the well is expected to take 35 days and cost approximately $22 million. ADX serves as the operator of Lambouka-1 with 30 percent interest. Project partners include Gulfsands Petroleum with 30 percent, Carnavale Resources with 20 percent, PharmAust Limited with 10 percent and XState Resources with 10 percent. Lambouka Prospect One of the largest undrilled prospects in the Mediterranean Sea, the Lambouka Prospect straddles two licenses, the Kerkouane Permit offshore Tunisia and the Pantelleria License offshore southern Italy. The Lambouka-1 exploration well is located 160 kilometers northeast of Tunis in the Sicily Channel. The target depth for the Lambouka-1 well is 3,000 meters, drilled to evaluate three potential hydrocarbon formation objectives. With an estimated mean prospective resource of 270 million barrels of oil equivalent, the Lambouka prospect will likely be developed as an independent project if oil is discovered and in conjunction with the nearby Dougga field if gas condensate is discovered.  Look to PennEnergy’s Global Offshore Weather Report daily to find the most up-to-date wind, weather and wave information for the four busiest offshore regions worldwide.
