  1. Oil spill under investigation at 8-MW Paradise River small hydro plant in Canada

An investigation is under way to determine the cause of an oil spill at Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro ’s 8-MW Paradise River small hydro plant, according to The Southern Gazette. Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro spokeswoman Erin Squires is credited for saying about 100 to 150 liters of oil was released from an oil tank with a total capacity of 540 liters. The Southern Gazette says the incident was reported to Service NL, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Environment Canada. In addition, East Coast Emergency Response was brought in to assist at the site and an absorbent boom was deployed Sept. 24. The Paradise River plant, near the mouth of Paradise River on the Burin Peninsula, began operating in 1989 with a single Francis turbine-generator unit. It operates as a run-of-river facility and has a 43-meter-high concrete arch dam with an overflow spillway.
