  1. TEPCO, GE Partner for Digital Optimization at Thermal-Powered Stations

By Editors of Power Engineering GE Power and Tokyo-based TEPCO Fuel & Power Co. have announced an agreement to jointly develop digital solutions throughout TEPCO’s thermal power fleet. As a first step, the companies will install GE’s Asset Performance Management software in the fourth unit of Futtsu Power Station, which is the third-largest natural gas-fueled power plant owned by the company. The installation is scheduled for next year. The partnership for the industrial internet of things initiative will use GE’s cloud-based Predix platform, which can connect industrial systems, collect data and provide real-time analysis aimed to improve plant performance and operations. The long-term goal of the partnership is to increase the long-term reliability and flexibility of TEPCO’s thermal power plants, as well as to reduce life-cycle costs and to use analytics to promote TEPCO’s operational optimization. “The Futtsu station installation is our first advanced digital power plant project in Japan and demonstrates the numerous operational benefits that utilities can achieve by investing in the industry’s latest software solutions,” said Steve Bolze, president and CEO of GE Power. Futtsu Power Station is located in Chiba prefecture east of Tokyo. GE is scheduled to begin installing the APM software at the station in 2017.
