  1. Combined Cycle Power Plant Proposed for Eastern Ohio

By Editors of Power Engineering Houston-based EmberClear Corp. plans to build a 1,000-MW natural gas-fired combined cycle power plant on a 60-acre site in eastern Ohio near several gas pipelines carrying natural gas produced from the region’s abundant shale gas fields. The Harrison County Community Improvement Corporation told the Harrison News-Herald the plant will be built in the Harrison County Industrial Park. If federal, state and local regulators approve the project, construction would begin in 2018 with commercial operation expected in 2021. The $900 million project would create about 500 people during construction and would provide permanent employment for about 30 people. The project should have no problem securing a steady supply of natural gas . The site is within a few short miles of several natural gas pipelines operating by Dominion East, Spectra, Energy Transfer and Columbia. What’s more, several gas distillation facilities in Harrison County are planning to expand production. “We were in competition with other counties for this project,” said CIC Executive Director Nick Homrighausen. “Through the collaborative efforts of my office and the county commissioners, we were able to land this viable project in Harrison County.” Nearly 19,000 MW of power generation fueled with natural gas is expected to be built and commissioned between 2016 and 2018 in the U.S., according to the  Energy Information Administration . Not surprisingly, much of that capacity (52 percent) is being built near shale formations containing prolific amounts of low-priced natural gas.
