Conference Review: Oil Sands & Heavy Oil Technologies

Originally Broadcast: July 17, 2008
Now available on Demand
Length: Approximately 1.5 hours
Speakers: Bob Tippee (Moderator), Editor, Oil & Gas Journal
, ,
, ,
, ,

Overview:

The webcast will address five questions crucial to the oil sands and heavy oil industry:

1. How should capital investment and the distribution of profits be adapted to: a) the need to expend energy to move oil sands or heavy oil out of the subsurface, and b) the transparency requirements of public stakeholders?

2. How must economic and regulatory systems change to accommodate the processing operations that prepare bitumen and heavy oil for market?

3. Where is the best place, economically and politically, to upgrade?

4. What technical and operational advances must occur, and what societal accommodations may be necessary, to optimize pipeline movement of bitumen and heavy oil derivatives over long distances?

5. How does the oil sands and heavy oil industry respond to charges that the energy supply and wealth that result from its work do not justify the environmental and social consequences?

Discussion leaders will be Derek Macdonald, Alstom Canada; Keng Chung, Well Resources; Jim Hyne, HYJAY R&D; Mike Freeman, M-I SWACO; and Peter McAleer, Tundra Solutions.

Also on the panel will be other members of the Advisory Board of the Oil Sands and Heavy Oil Technologies Conference: Chris Lehecka, ConocoPhillips; Tom Prokop, Suncor Energy; Paul Brown, Equinox Engineering; Teresa Hansen, Power Engineering; Dr. Shunlan Liu, Alberta Energy Research Institute; Randy McGill, Siemens Canada Limited; Guntis Moritis, Oil & Gas Journal; Jim Hyne, HYJAY Research & Development; and Jerry d'Aquin, Con-Sul Inc.; Frank Forte, Jacobs Canada.

About Ingrain :

Ingrain offers measurement of cores/drill cuttings using patented calculation methodologies to compute rock properties & fluid flow directly on complex pore networks based on rock physics, determining porosity, multi-phase permeability, elasticity & other properties. We can directly image the 3D pore structure of oil sand on irregularly sized and shaped fragments as they come from a well.

Moreover, we can apply a numerical re-compaction procedure to such digital objects to close the large pore gaps presumably introduced by the expansion of the oil at surface conditions.
