Ruling puts Sunflower's coal-fired power plant project on hold

U.S. District Court Judge Emmett Sullivan has ruled Sunflower Electric Power Corp.’s proposed 895 MW coal-fired Holcomb expansion must complete an environmental review before construction on the project can commence in southwest Kansas.

The ruling handed down Tuesday follows a March decision by Sullivan, which determined the federal government’s Rural Utilities Service (RUS) had failed to complete an environmental impact statement before granting approvals for the proposed $2.8 billion coal-fired power project.

Sunflower spokeswoman Cindy Hertel said the utility's officials are still uncertain how the ruling will affect its project. "We haven't had a chance to look at it, to fully digest it," she told The Associated Press.
