The Abu Dhabi Gas Co. (ATHEER) said it would boost its gas processing capacity to 3 bcfd in 2001.
The company also would begin the "first time" supply of gas to Dubai, via a 48-in., 112-km pipeline.
ATHEER said its principal objective was the development of natural gas resources in Abu Dhabi, so that the company could "secure additional supplies and meet future domestic demand." ATHEER said it planned to use its existing gas resources for injection into oil reservoirs, to sustain oil production levels.
The company was established in June 1999 to handle processing of associated and nonassociated gas and the transportation and distribution of gas, condensate, natural gas liquids, and liquid sulfur to consumers within the United Arab Emirates. It also operated and maintained the pipelines required for these operations.
ADMA-OPCO, an operating arm of Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (ADNOC), awarded global technology group ABB a $260 million contract to design the offshore Khuff gas project in Abu Dhabi.
ABB said the scope of the contract included modifications and technology upgrades of 13 existing gas platforms and the construction of two platforms.
The platforms would have topside weights of 4,400 tonnes and 1,200 tonnes and would be placed in 20-30 m of water. ADNOC's 70% owned construction company, National Petroleum Construction Co., was the designated fabricator and constructor.
Electricity generation was boosting gas consumption in the United Arab Emirates. Demand for gas in the northern emirates of the UAE was growing at a rate of 6-7%/year, with 2000 demand at 250 MMcfd.
Emirates General Petroleum Corp. was supplying 70 MMcfd from Sharjah to the northern emirates.
The Federal Electricity and Water Authority (FEWA) was using liquid fuel equivalent, diesel, and heavy fuel oil to supplement gas supply.
FEWA was responsible for power generation and the distribution and production of desalinated water in the northern emirates.
