Myanmar pressed three major gas development projects in 1997 but fell subject to economic sanctions imposed by the U.S., which accused the government of political repression.
Deliveries were to start in mid-1998 under a gas sales agreement with Petroleum Authority of Thailand (PTT) from Yadana field under development by Total SA of France and partners in the Gulf of Martaban. The agreement was for 525 MMcfd for 30 years. A 36 in. pipeline from the Yadana platform was to carry gas 346 km to shore and 63 km onshore to the Thai border. Total had made further discoveries around Yadana, including Badamya and Sein gas fields.
In a separate Yadana project, Myanmar planned to use 105 MMcfd of its 125 MMcfd entitlement from the field to fuel a 340 MW combined-cycle power plant and 1,750 metric ton/day urea fertilizer plant near Kyaiktaw Village about 80 km southwest of Yangon. The domestic project, involving a joint venture of Total, Unocal, and Mitsui, included a 240 km, 20 in. pipeline.
Partners in Yetagun field in the Gulf of Martaban signed an agreement in March 1997 to supply gas to PTT through a 20 in. pipeline with a 212 km offshore segment and 63 mile onshore link. The contract was for 200 MMcfd starting between October 1999 and January 2000.
After imposition of sanctions and protests against its involvement in the project, Texaco Inc. withdrew from the Yetagun project, selling its 42.9% interest to Petronas of Malaysia. Premier Oil plc took over as operator. It planned exploration and appraisal drilling in 1998 around a discovery 40 km northwest of Yetagun, Aung Zay Ya-1, which flowed 9.47 MMcfd of gas plus condensate through a 40/64 in. choke.
ARCO said it would sell an interest in blocks in the Gulf of Martaban. One well drilled on its acreage tested 18.5 MMcfd of gas from Miocene sandstone.
Another U.S. company, Unocal Corp., refused to withdraw from the Yadana export project.
