Evergreen Resources Inc., Denver, began exploring two 5,000 sq km blocks in the central and southern parts of the Tamarugal basin near Peru. Work requirement was one well on each concession by 2000.

Cardinal Resources Inc., White Plains, N.Y., was exploring its 1.2 million acre block in the northern part of the basin.

Cardinal was also pursuing a coalbed methane play on a 500,000 acre onshore block in the Arauco basin between Valdivia and Concepcion.

Cordex Petroleums Inc., Denver, sold its interests in the Austral basin.

Petroleos y Asfalto Cordex SA, Santiago, let a $31 million turnkey contract to PDM Engineered Construction, a unit of Pitt-Des Moines Inc., Houston, to design and build an asphalt and fuel oil terminal in Ventanas, north of Valparaiso.
