Mobil Pegasus SR is a high performance gas engine oil specifically developed for the lubrication of modern medium and high-speed, four cycle engines operating on aggressive gases typically containing high levels of Siloxanes, where high wear or scuffing is a significant issue.

Kathy Tellier, lead gas engine oil formulator at ExxonMobil Lubricants & Specialties, provides an update on the Mobil SHC Pegasus product and how it is helping gas engine operators to maximise productivity and reduce costs.

1.    What benefits have gas engine operators experienced with Mobil SHC Pegasus?

Primary benefits include extended oil drain interval and equipment life, increased equipment reliability, equipment operating efficiency as well as up to a 1.5 percent  energy efficiency saving. Ensuing secondary benefits can see reduced resource use and significant cost savings, such as a reduction in the costs associated with oil disposal, whilst the fuel efficiency saving made possible with Mobil SHC Pegasus can result in reduced emission costs in countries where legislation is in place.

We have a number of gas engine operators currently experiencing these benefits including seven customers in the United States and Europe who have conducted field trials using Mobil SHC Pegasus.

For example, a recent field test conducted with Enogex, one of the largest natural gas transmission and midstream service companies in the United States specialising in natural gas gathering, processing, transportation and storage, disassembled one of its operating Caterpillar G3516 natural gas engines after running on Mobil SHC Pegasus for more than 16,000 hours without drain (a normal oil change taking place at 3,000 hours). The engine component parts were found to be in excellent condition with minimal wear and minimal ‘sludging’, carbon deposits.

Another customer field test has demonstrated an energy efficiency saving of more than 1.5 percent on a Caterpillar G3516 gas engine.

2.    Which of the major engine manufacturers have approved and recommended Mobil SHC Pegasus?

Over the past 12 months, since the launch of Mobil SHC Pegasus, the Mobil Industrial Lubricants team has been working closely with three of the biggest original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) both in Europe and the United States. We have now either completed or are in the midst of conducting proof of performance field testing with all three of these key OEMs.

For instance, we have just recently completed acceptance testing with global engine manufacturer Caterpillar (conducted with Enogex U.S.), which showed extremely positive results after extensive hours of oil testing.

3.    Is Mobil SHC Pegasus the preferred product for use in gas engines?

Using breakthrough technologies, Mobil SHC Pegasus optimises equipment productivity and protection and is one of the first gas engine oil formulations on the market to deliver real energy saving potential.  Extensive independent university laboratory and field tests have demonstrated that the product helps reduce fuel consumption by up to 1.5 percent.

In addition, controlled field-testing in demanding gas compression applications has also shown that the new Mobil SHC Pegasus formulation delivers the potential for increased oil drain intervals for more than 16,000 hours – four to eight times that of standard natural gas engine oils.
