Next Generation Gas Engine Oil Lubrication

“Engine designs, operating conditions, customer's needs and environmental factors continue to place high demands on lubricants for natural gas engines.  Projections for future energy supply and demand indicate that oil, coal and natural gas will continue to be the predominant energy sources through 2030.1   As energy prices fluctuate through market cycles, owners and operators of natural gas engines will seek ways to reduce their energy costs.  This will be especially true in power generation markets where fuel costs directly affect profitability.  In addition, the power generation industry is seeking options to improve their productivity and sustainability.   In many cases, a well designed lubricant can provide benefits that contribute to sustainability such as extended oil life, reduced oil for disposition, energy efficiency and extended equipment life for power generation applications, including cogeneration, biogas and landfill applications.

Further to the paper presented at PowerGen 20102,  this paper will follow-up on next generation natural gas engine oil product development results utilizing leading edge product technology that have demonstrated extended oil life, excellent piston deposit control and increased engine efficiency in the field.  This paper will also provide additional case studies of the extensive engine durability test programs which evaluated the oil life, piston cleanliness, lube oil consumption and wear performance of gas engine oils in shop and field applications.  This paper will also cover the preliminary results of lower viscosity candidates which provide significantly greater efficiency gains while maintaining excellent engine durability.  Consequently the development of these next generation natural gas engine oils could significantly enhance the  sustainability of natural gas fuelled power generation engines.

Energy-Efficient Oil Delivers Reduced Fuel Costs & Increased Oil Life Resulting in Financial Benefits to Customers

Mobil SHC Pegasus delivers significant fuel savings for customers
Customers achieve oil drain intervals of more than 16,000 hours – four to eight times longer than standard natural gas engine oils

(MILAN, Italy, 7 JUNE 2011) – Mobil SHC Pegasus, the latest evolution in ExxonMobil’s range of Mobil Pegasus natural gas engine oils, has delivered significant benefits to customers operating natural gas engines in power generation, gas compression and green house operations.  The results achieved to date, following the launch of Mobil SHC Pegasus 12 months ago, have surpassed initial product claims with companies experiencing longer than expected oil drain intervals.

Customers throughout the United States and Europe have benefited from the introduction of Mobil SHC Pegasus, in a range of engines developed by leading Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) Jenbacher, Caterpillar and Waukesha.  In France, Dalkia, Europe's leading provider of energy services to local authorities and businesses, monitored the energy efficiency performance of Mobil SHC Pegasus in a Caterpillar G3516 engine used for power generation.  Energy efficiency was measured by dividing the power generation output in kW by the fuel flow rate multiplied by fuel heating value.  The efficiency gain with Mobil SHC Pegasus over a two month period was reported by Dalkia as in excess of 1.5 percent, compared to a standard natural gas engine oil.

“Since the launch of Mobil SHC Pegasus, the Mobil Industrial Lubricants team has been working closely with customers and leading OEMs both in Europe and the United States to monitor the performance of Mobil SHC Pegasus in the field,” said Kathleen Tellier, Products Research and Technology, ExxonMobil Research and Engineering, a division of ExxonMobil Corporation.  “The results to date have been outstanding and we’re currently undertaking additional field trials and research to investigate additional performance benefits of Mobil SHC Pegasus such as extending filter life.  This would enable companies to extend maintenance periods, helping to build a new level of efficiency into their operation.”

Enogex, one of the largest natural gas transmission and midstream service companies in the United States, monitored the durability and extended oil drain potential of Mobil SHC Pegasus.  Dismantling one of its Caterpillar G3516 engines after running it on Mobil SHC Pegasus for more than 16,000 hours without drain, the engine component parts were found to be in excellent condition with minimal wear, ‘sludging’ and carbon deposits.  The results demonstrate the potential of Mobil SHC Pegasus to increase oil drain intervals by four–to-eight times compared to standard gas engine oils.  Average fuel consumption savings of 1.5 percent were also achieved .

Other customers in Germany, Netherlands and the United States are recording positive benefits of using Mobil SHC Pegasus, with improved energy efficiency and extended oil drain intervals in Jenbacher J412 and Waukesha P9390GL engines.  These benefits, alongside reduced oil for disposal and extended equipment life, can also help contribute to the overall sustainability of a business operating natural gas engines.

Mobil Pegasus and the world's largest biogas plant

Mobil Pegasus gas engine oils help keep the world’s largest biogas plant running smoothly, as customers testify in this video case study.

The high-performance range of lubricants plays a key role at the Klarsee BioEnergie Park in Penkun, Germany. The park is at the cutting edge of bioenergy, processing 1,000 tons of corn a day from local farms to power over 40,000 households.

ExxonMobil teamed up with engine manufacturer GE Jenbacher to ensure the plant’s forty 500kW gas engines can perform at their peak with minimum downtime. The ExxonMobil team identified specialist Mobil Pegasus lubricants to protect each component from wear and corrosion, as well as providing Signum, used oil analysis, to help the plant to improve its maintenance more efficiently by reducing unscheduled downtime.

The Mobil Pegasus line has been evolving over 40 years to optimise productivity and efficiency across a range of engine technologies including the latest stationary natural gas engines. This video case study is just one example of the range in action.

ExxonMobil’s fourth-quarter and full-year 2011 estimated results came out today. Our fourth-quarter 2011 earnings were $9.4 billion, and our global earnings total for the year was $41 billion. As I said yesterday, some in Washington will try to make political capital out of oil industry earnings, and will use this opportunity to call for new energy taxes. So I thought I would mention some interesting facts ...
ExxonMobil will release financial results for the fourth quarter and full year 2011 tomorrow. Although many Americans understand that the energy the oil and natural gas industry produces is vital to U.S. economic recovery and job growth, some in Washington will no doubt use the occasion to call for increased taxes or other punitive measures against the industry. These critics will likely refer to aggregate industry earnings and try to convey a misleading impression about our industry’s earnings and economic contributions. So what's the truth?
I’m asked this question a lot. And I know a lot of drivers ask themselves this question when they pull up to the pump. The answer is based on the economics of supply and demand and how products are manufactured and sold – along with what the government takes in taxes. Let’s take a look, based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s breakdown of the estimated average price of a gallon of gas in December 2011, which was $3.27.
A Cornell University study came out last spring with what many thought was an unbelievable finding that lifecycle emissions from shale gas could be higher than those of coal. A subsequent Cornell University study has shown that finding really was unbelievable. This subsequent study, recently published by Professor Lawrence Cathles and his colleagues at Cornell, criticizes the methodology and findings of last year’s study by Cornell Professor Robert Howarth and his colleagues.
Yesterday, President Obama announced that he had rejected the permit for the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. The decision came despite the State Department’s rigorous study showing that the Keystone XL pipeline would pose no undue risks to people or the environment – neither by the type of crude it would be carrying, nor by the safety of the pipeline itself.
