Petsec Energy Ltd. of Australia spudded the first well at its Vermilion 257 lease in the Gulf of Mexico.

Vermilion 257 is immediately east of Petsec's Vermilion 258 lease where Petsec drilled four successful wells and installed production facilities in 2004.

The well, Vermilion 257 B-2, is being drilled from a jacket set last month and will test two targets.

It is being drilled in a water depth of 42m (138 ft) to a measured depth of 4,294m (14,169ft). Petsec said it expects to drill the well over 21 days.

If successful, a small deck with test facilities will be installed on the jacket, with a gas pipeline to the Vermilion 258 platform, which has condensate and water separation facilities with sufficient capacity to handle production from Vermilion 257.
