MODEC receives integrated HSE certification from ABS

HOUSTON -- The American Bureau of Shipping has certified that MODEC's corporate health safety and environment (HSE) management system complies with the requirements of the International Safety Management Code (ISM Code), ISO 14001:2004 (environmental standard), and OHSAS 18001:1999 (health and safety standard). MODEC is the first floating production facilities company to obtain integrated certification against all three international codes, the company says.

"This certification is evidence that MODEC is truly committed to protecting people, assets, and the environment," says Cy Sharp, global director of MODEC's HSE affairs. "Our work is performed all around the world; so we have many cultures to communicate with. The challenge we face is aligning our HSE culture from ship to shore and from Southeast Asia to the Gulf of Mexico and Brazil and beyond, but we now have the systems in place to make it work."

ABS concluded an audit of the Houston office on June 8, 2007. ABS officials will audit the MacaƩ, Brazil, office as well as the FPSO Cidade do Rio de Janeiro MV14, a MODEC owned and operated vessel that is working in the Espadarte Sul field offshore Brazil. A third site visit will take place at the Tokyo office. Additional certification will be based on the results of these audits.

"This integrated certification is important, not only to us, but also to our clients," says Kenji Yamada, president and CEO of MODEC Inc. "Safety of our people, our assets, and our environment makes good business sense. MODEC is committed to being a responsible corporate citizen."
