STOCKHOLM -- Lundin Petroleum has made an oil and gas discovery with exploration well 21/8-4Z on the Torphins prospect in block 21/8 on the UK continental shelf.

Well 21/8-4 and sidetrack 21/8-4Z reached TD of 8,177 ft (2,492 m) and 7,250 ft (2,210 m) respectively. Both the main well and sidetrack encountered oil and gas in the Palaeocene sandstone reservoir, Lundin says. Analysis of the well results is under way to determine the discovery's commercial extent.

Transocean's semisubmersible GSF Arctic II drilled the discovery well.
