Using Seismic Data to Judge the Success of Hydraulic Fracturing

Date: May 21, 2008
Overview:

Tight gas reservoirs typically require multiple stages of hydraulic fracturing in order to create the needed permeability to produce the gas locked in the pore space. Optimum field development depends on determining the effectiveness of the fracturing and proppant programs. A new seismic method, combining time lapse vertical seismic profiles and microseismic monitoring, is providing a potential way to detect and locate open, effective hydraulic fractures, and therefore a monitoring method to help design optimal fracturing programs.

EOR/IOR and the Future of Global Oil Supply

Originally Broadcast: April 16, 2008
Overview:

PennEnergy's Oil & Gas Journal Research Center is pleased to present the webcast "EOR/IOR and the Future of Global Oil Supply," scheduled for 12:00 pm CDT on April 16, 2008.

The webcast is thematically connected to and an official event of the 2008 Improved Oil Recovery Symposium in Tulsa, Okla., on April 19-23. The symposium is sponsored by the Society of Petroleum Engineers’ Mid-continent Section and the US Department of Energy. It is the world's largest gathering of petroleum engineers, geoscientists, and others specializing in the related fields of IOR and enhanced oil recovery (EOR). As many as 800 of these experts are expected to attend the Tulsa symposium. For more information on the IOR 2008 conference and exhibition, please visit the website at http://www.speior.org/.

With oil prices topping $100/barrel, interest in IOR/EOR in this country has never been higher. Indeed, technology advances in IOR/EOR may prove to be what staves off the "peak" in global oil production that some are predicting.

Three noted oil and gas industry leaders and key participants in IOR2008 are headlining the webcast: William F. Lawson, IOR2008 General Chair, Rafael Sandrea, IOR2008 Plenary Speaker, and Paul Willhite, IOR2008 Technical Program Chair. Bob Williams, former Executive Editor of Oil & Gas Journal and currently Director of Research for the Oil & Gas Journal Research Center, will moderate the webcast.

The webcast will be in a panel discussion format followed by a Q&A session as follows:

  • Webcast overview/introductions - Williams
  • IOR/EOR in a world of $100/bbl oil - Lawson
  • IOR and future oil supply potential - Sandrea
  • IOR's technical challenges - Willhite
  • Q&A

Hurricane Preparedness

Originally Broadcast: August 21, 2007
Overview:

API, in collaboration with members of the petroleum industry, developed three interim bulletins that introduce new hurricane met/ocean conditions for the Gulf of Mexico and address the application of the new met/ocean conditions using the present design practices and standards.

The following is an overview of the bulletins:

Bulletin 2INT - MET, Interim Guidance on Hurricane Conditions in the Gulf of Mexico
This bulletin will present the met/ocean conditions for four identified regions of the Gulf of Mexico (West; West Central, Central, and East). The information included in the bulletin can be used in the independent extremes of wind, wave, current and surge and will be presented for multiple return periods. The proposed document provides wind velocities, deepwater (water depth greater than or equal to 1,000 m) wave conditions, current information, surge and tidal amplitude. Storm surge and tide, significant wave height (Hs), individual expected maximum wave height (Hmax), and individual expected maximum crest elevation will also be included.

Bulletin 2INT - DG, Interim Guidance for Design of Offshore Structures for Hurricane Conditions
This bulletin will provide interim guidance on how to apply the new met/ocean conditions to platforms that are at a point in the design phase where it is still possible to consider the effects of the new met/ocean conditions on the structure being designed. The documents for which these interim guidelines will apply are RP 2A, RP 2FPS, RP 2T, RP 2SK, RP 2RD, and Bulletin 2TD.

Bulletin 2INT - EX, Interim Guidance for Assessment of Existing Offshore Structures for Hurricane Conditions
This bulletin will provide interim guidance to Owners/Operators and Engineers for the assessment of existing fixed and floating permanent offshore structures in the Gulf of Mexico as a result of the updated met/ocean conditions. The document will also highlight general "housekeeping" items and load reduction measures to mitigate damage from hurricane conditions.

These bulletins have been presented in detail at Workshops in New Orleans and Houston in mid-July. The webcast will provide those who were unable to attend the Workshops with an opportunity to hear a summary of the Workshop presentations and pose questions to the presenters. The presentations will be made by the following industry experts:

Overall Intent and Context of the 3 Bulletins - David J. Wisch, Chevron Fellow, Chevron Energy Technology Company
Bulletin 2INT-MET - James Stear - James D. Stear, Ph.D., Staff Research Scientist Chevron Energy Technology Company
Company Bulletin 2INT-EX - Frank Puskar, President, Energo Engineering
Dave Wish - closure

The presentations will last about an hour, and will be followed by an opportunity for questions.

Gas Shales and Coalbed Methane Crucial To Replacing Conventional Gas Production

Originally Broadcast: May 31, 2007
Overview:

Today, unconventional gas sources are making a difference in North American natural gas supply, important in replacing production in classically declining conventional gas fields in the U.S. and Canada. Not so many years ago there was little coalbed methane gas production and very little production of methane from fractured gas shales. There was, however, measurable supply from newly drilled gas wells in deep formations.

This webcast will focus on the growing activity in CBM and gas shales, leaving discussion of deep gas for another time. The CBM/gas shale growth story is based on improving economics - it took a steady increase in demand and a higher gas prices over a multi-year period to induce development in these two areas of unconventional production.

This recent change is due to the growth and popularity of CBM and gas shale opportunities among producers, availability of leases, lower costs in drilling and development, the unique producing life of typical unconventional gas fields -- and now the importance of them both to the North American gas supply. As of 2006, CBM and gas shale together accounted for over 11% of the North American gas supply, and still growing.

This presentation will delve into the reasons for growth, drivers and axioms of business for these two unconventional gas opportunities in the U.S. and Canada.
