Safety equipment: Novinium®, a provider of cable-life extension solutions, announces its PreVent™ Manhole Event Prevention system designed to actively reduce incidents such as manhole fires, smoking and explosions. Launched at the IEEE show in Dallas this month, the product was enthusiastically received by attendees.
An estimated 2,000 manhole events occur in the North America each year, or 5.5 per day. Manhole events are increasing as utility infrastructure ages, causing significant network damage and costly outages. These events include smoke, fire, and explosions, attracting high political and media scrutiny.
PreVent is the only manhole event suppression solution that actively reduces incidents and protects the public with an innovative prevention system. Active venting removes combustible gases and prevents gas accumulation to improve overall manhole environment. Water control features limit exposure to salt water and debris, and the real-time smart monitoring system uses cloud-based sensors to predict incidents and transmit immediate alerts.
“The introduction of PreVent will allow cities to minimize exposure to potentially hazardous situations,” said Rich Brinton, VP of Business Development at Novinium. “PreVent is the only solution that proactively prevents manhole events from occurring with a patented ventilation system.”
• Ventilated cover is crowned with water dams and air slots to limit water and salt intrusion.
• Ventilator reaches down into the manhole to better extract combustible gases.
• Customizable design options fit any size manhole, without the cost of extra rings.
Novinium’s goal is to help utilities avoid interruptions in service—whether from manhole events or power outages. “Utilities face a complex challenge—they must balance a tight budget and maintain high safety standards, all while providing customers with reliable service at affordable rates,” says Brinton.
Novinium’s patented injection process rejuvenates and extends the reliable life of cable up to 40 years. Founded on 28 years of industry experience by the inventors of cable rejuvenation, Novinium’s technology solutions address circuit owners’ infrastructure problems at a fraction of the cost of existing methods, and save energy and natural resources by eliminating the need for additional production of copper and polymers for new cables. Headquartered in suburban Seattle, the privately held company is the recognized technology leader in cable rejuvenation and was honored as one of Seattle’s 2013 Best Places to Work.
