Utility supplies: Moxa, a supplier of hardened networking equipment, announced that its EDS-P510A-8PoE PoE+ Ethernet switch has received United Laboratories Certification for deployment in Class I, Div. 2 hazardous locations for applications such as power generation, gas storage, chemical processing, and upstream oil applications, where the atmosphere may contain the presence of explosive elements.

UL Certification makes the EDS-P510A-8PoE one of the world's first PoE+ Ethernet switches engineered to perform in environments classified as hazardous by the National Electrical Code, marking another significant milestone for Moxa in addressing the networking needs of industry, noted Richard Wood, Product Marketing Manager for Moxa's Industrial Ethernet Infrastructure: "As the world moves towards the Industrial Internet of Things, we are definitely seeing a demand for communications equipment designed for harsh environments. A managed PoE+ switch that can be safely installed in flammable environments allows oil and gas providers to be much more flexible with their network deployment."

With the Class 1 Div 2-rated EDS-P510A-8PoE, engineers and system integrators now have a highly reliable, fully compliant and rugged PoE+ switch for hazardous locations, where previously no option was available. Unlike commercial-grade PoE+ switches, the switches do not require an enclosure or remote installation, so they lower overall system cost without compromising safety, maintenance demands or network performance. They are also less susceptible to environmental factors such as electromagnetic inference, or shock and vibration. Safeguarded by 3KV surge protection and a wide temperature range (-40°C to +75°C on select models), they ensure uninterrupted reliability of PoE systems while delivering network speeds of up to 1000 Mbps to eliminate bottlenecks.

As a managed switch, the Moxa EDS-P510A-8PoE offers many intelligent features to control traffic over the network. It supports a variety of management functions, including STP/RSTP, Turbo Ring, Turbo Chain and PoE power management, while providing up to 30 watts of power per PoE+ port in standard mode and allowing high power output of up to 36 watts for industrial heavy-duty PoE devices. At the same time, these switches are simple to deploy and configure, letting users take advantage of the managed network services they need.
