Power management company Eaton recently introduced the Cooper Power series RFN-1200 wireless interface device for use in Distribution Automation (DA) applications. The RFN-1200 device is an extension to Eaton’s Smart Grid network offering. Providing two-way automated communication between Eaton’s Yukon software platform and a down line control or device, utility users can gather remote device data or initiate controls, utilizing DNP 3.0 protocol. This flexible interface device easily connects with a variety of DA solutions, including capacitor bank, recloser and voltage regulator controls across Eaton’s RF Mesh Smart Grid network.

“The wireless interface device is fully interoperable, easy to service and requires minimal training to operate, saving significant time and labor costs,” said Dan Smock, product manager, Eaton’s Cooper Power Systems Division. “With flexible deployment options, the RFN-1200 device now has the ability to be conveniently paired with existing Eaton Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), Demand Response (DR) and Distribution Automation (DA) networks to effectively monitor and control a utility¹s distribution system.”

Eaton’s solution provides utilities a single Smart Grid platform that enables end of line voltage monitoring, conservation voltage reduction (CVR), and Volt/VAR Optimization (VVO) applications. The platform securely controls Smart Grid operations across one network providing ease of use and simplified service for utility customers. In helping the Smart Grid platform operate more cost effectively, the RFN-1200 device can also operate as a DA Network First solution for a utility’s DA needs, allowing for AMI and DR to be added at a later date.

Eaton offers a range of Cooper Power series products that provide a range of power delivery and reliability, automation and control, advanced metering and demand response solutions designed to increase efficiency and smart operations. These products serve customers in the utility, commercial, industrial, mining, renewable energy and other markets.

Eaton’s electrical business is a global leader with expertise in power distribution and circuit protection; backup power protection; control and automation; lighting and security; structural solutions and wiring devices; solutions for harsh and hazardous environments; and engineering services. Eaton is positioned through its global solutions to answer today¹s most critical electrical power management challenges.
