Transformer testing: GE helps utilities prevent costly transformer failures

MARKHAM, ONTARIO—Transformer maintenance: GE (NYSE: GE) introduces the Intellix BMT 300, a bushing monitoring system for transformers that can detect unseen problems before they occur, keeping the power on and avoiding costly transformer failures for utilities, industrial metals businesses and petrochemical companies. With the average cost of a transformer in the millions of dollars and bushing failures being potentially catastrophic in more than half of the cases, the Intellix BMT 300 helps protect against the cost of the transformer, the loss of revenue during the downtime and the collateral damages and reputational consequences that a transformer failure can create.

“Today more than ever, utilities and industrial companies need to manage costs while delivering reliable power,” said Simon Phillips, general manager, Monitoring & DiagnosticsGrid Automation. “Transformers are a critical component of the power production cycle and bushings are an integral part of a transformer. The Intellix BMT 300 monitors the transformer’s bushings to identify potential failures before they happen to prevent costly repairs and in some cases, avoid the complete loss of the customer’s transformer.”

The BMT 300 provides customers with several key benefits, including:

·      Continuous monitoring for early recognition of developing bushing faults to avoid catastrophic failure.

·      Partial Discharge activity detection for faster identification of potential arcing faults.

·      Condition-based maintenance and replacement of bushings resulting in less downtime, fewer site visits and lower costs.

·      Seamless integration with GE’s Kelman TRANSFIX DGA analyzer and PERCEPTION software for a comprehensive, in-depth view of the entire transformer health.

·      One-source supplier installation and service, ensuring proper communication and minimizing the administrative burden to provide lower total cost of ownership.
