Circuit breaker monitoring: ABB launches CBS Lite CSA high voltage remote monitoring solution for SF6 breakers

Orlando, FL—Circuit breaker monitoring: ABB has launched another new, smart grid-enabled remote monitoring solution for SF6 power circuit breakers rated 38 800 kV, known as the CBS Lite CSA condition-based maintenance monitoring solution.

The abbreviation “CSA” stands for “Coil Current Signature Analysis”, which is a feature provided in addition to the monitoring features of the regular CBS Lite. The CBS Lite CSA monitors interrupter wear, integrity of the SF6 gas system, the circuit breaker mechanical system, the electrical control system and auxiliaries. The CBS Lite CSA consists of a microprocessor unit and sensors. The unit is housed in a NEMA-1 enclosure, which is installed inside the circuit breaker control cabinet or in an additional enclosure mounted on the side of the control cabinet.

The CBS Lite CSA is designed and tested to operate under a wide range of temperatures, from -40ºF to 160ºF, and to survive electro-magnetic interference (EMI) conditions in a substation environment. It has been tested for electro-magnetic compatibility (EMC) and surge-withstand capability according to IEC 61000-4 standards. The front panel has 5 lights that indicate status and condition. Its sensors and inputs detect parameters necessary to determine the condition health of the circuit breaker, such as gas pressure, temperature, current, voltage and coil continuity. The CBS Lite CSA continuously collects data from sensors, performs calculations, stores data in memory and compares data against established limits or set-points for each parameter, which provides condition alarms from the device via alarm contacts, DNP3.0 or as part of ABB’s software packages.

The CBS Lite CSA is a variant of the CBS Lite hardware to include our new Coils Current Signature Analysis algorithm. Circuit breaker signature analysis has proved to be an excellent innovation for assessing the condition of circuit breaker operating mechanisms and related components.

CBS Lite CSA still offers universal monitoring on any manufacturer’s single -pressure SF6 gas circuit breaker, ABB or otherwise. Customers can also take advantage of factory installations on ABB and other OEM manufactures, as well as, field retrofit deployment projects available through ABB High Voltage Service.

“We are happy to introduce the CBS Lite CSA condition-based maintenance monitoring solution to the market,” said Jeffrey Barker, Business Development Manager, High Voltage Service, ABB. “CBS Lite CSA offers another feature that will improve our breaker monitor offering. We continue to develop advanced features and products that will continue to support customer requirements.”
