Insulation sheet for high voltage transformers

Erie, Pa.—Haysite Reinforced Plastics has recently advanced its compression molded HST-II, HTF, and H515 glass polyester laminate insulation sheet products that have achieved UL approval rating for a 220C high thermal temperature. Designed for dry-type high voltage transformer insulation systems and elsewhere that require materials with high thermal indices, these products deliver excellent retention of electrical and mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. Additionally, all products are stable at their 220C thermal temperature rating.

Vital to keeping transformers operating at a safe and workable load capacity, the correct insulation materials can significantly prolong the life of a transformer by protecting the unit against the enemy of dry type transformersheat. Notably, the C-Class temperature rating of the HST-II/HTF/H515 insulation materials can give the engineer an option to use a reduced copper or aluminum conductor, offering an opportunity to reduce expensive winding conductor costs for the manufacturer.

Each product offers end-users specific performance characteristics for different applications including:
HAYSITE / HST-II: The HST-II is the benchmark for high temperature FRP materials; having been granted the UL’s highest thermal recognition ever by any glass polyester laminate (U.L. File No. E81893) with a 220C/210C rating for 1/8" thick and heavier, and a 210C/210C rating for 1/32" thick up to 1/8" thick.

Whereas standard epoxy and wood-based insulation boards can become unstable at 220C, HST-II exhibits excellent compression strength stability and retention of electrical and mechanical properties at this elevated temperature.

An asbestos-free solution, major industrial market applications for HST-II include high voltage transformers, oil-field transformers and dc motors, among others. Notably, the thick and rigid 10mm HST-II sheet is used extensively to produce combs to wind copper between the transformer ‘hair comb’ slots to guide across the unit. It is also popular in busbar strip supports to conduct electricity within a distribution board apparatus.
