Inspiring Young Women To Pursue Careers in Energy

At last night’s PennWell Awards Ceremony, Kim Greene, a 24-year veteran of the power industry, was named the POWER-GEN 2015 Woman of the Year.

Greene began her career as an engineer with Southern Company in 1991 and ascended to leadership roles at Mirant and Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), before returning to Southern Company Services in 2013 to become President and CEO. She was a keynote speaker at POWER-GEN International in 2014.

Today, she serves as chief operating officer of Southern Company and is responsible for overseeing system operations, which include generation, transmission, engineering and construction services, system planning, and research and environmental affairs, as well as the company’s competitive wholesale generation businesses.

Professionally, she credits her success to a variety of mentors over the years who have provided great examples in how they approach personnel or business issues, along with delivering constructive feedback and effective coaching. She said that her greatest mentor is her father. “I know most people feel parents profoundly impact their lives. My father not only helped guide and shape my moral and ethical standards, work ethic and outlook on life, but it’s because of him I attended engineering school,” she said in an interview in early November.

Greene was one of three finalists for the POWER-GEN Woman of the Year Award. In addition to Greene, the other two finalists were Theresa (Terry) Jester, a 35-year veteran of the solar industry with extensive leadership experience in the manufacturing and engineering of photovoltaic technologies and Roxann Laird, the director of the National Carbon Capture Center (NCCC), located in Wilsonville, Alabama, which serves a pivotal role in developing advanced technologies for generation facilities.  Laird is also the director of the global International Carbon Test Center Network.

The finalists were nominated by their peers and reviewed by the Women in Power committee, a diverse group of women representing all facets of power generation and transmission.

Greene, Jester and Laird will be featured panelists during the Woman in Power Luncheon where they will offer insights into how women can succeed in the traditionally male-dominated power generation industry.

The mission of the Women in Power committee is to provide role models to inspire young women to pursue careers in energy.
