Belgium Utility to Begin Construction in 2016 on 215 MW Biomass Power Plant

Belgian Eco Energy (Bee) recently said that it plans to begin construction on a 215 MW commercial biomass power plant in Ghent, Belgium, early next year.

Estimated to cost about 400 million euros ($453 million), the project will run on raw material biomass, including wood chips and agro-residues. According to Bee, the Ghent facility will be the largest biomass power plant in Europe.

Last November, Bee selected Abengoa to develop the project. According to Abengoa, the facility will use circulated fluidized bed technology to turn the biomass into high-pressure steam, which will pass through a steam turbine to produce electricity. Abengoa said that 100 MW of thermal energy from the plant will be distributed to supply heating to industries and households in the city of Ghent.

Bee supplies sustainable energy in Belgium to companies from its own production units and from a network of locally generated sustainable energy.

The company said in an Oct. 8 statement that it has selected the French company Veolia to handle the operation of the plant for the first 15 years.
