Technology at BP: What can be heard 2 miles beneath the sea floor?

Source: BP

Just like your music streaming app uses complex algorithms to distinguish between rock, jazz and classical music, BP uses distributed acoustic sensing two miles beneath the sea floor to listen to the different sounds made by liquids, gases and solids.

Technology underpins all that BP does in the Upstream. BP's strengths in exploration, deepwater, giant fields and gas value chains are supported by technology leadership positions in seismic imaging, enhanced oil recovery, unconventionals and digital technologies.

BP is using the same digital technology as music streaming apps to improve production from its offshore wells. Just like your music streaming app uses complex algorithms to distinguish between rock, jazz and classical music, BP uses DAS (distributed acoustic sensing) 2 miles beneath the sea floor to listen to the different sounds made by liquids, gas and solids.

Technologies like these help deliver improved levels of safety, reliability and efficiency across oil and gas operations, as well as to find and recover more hydrocarbons to meet the world’s energy needs.
