The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) published the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Alaska’s Liberty Project, initiating a 90-day public comment submission period.

Liberty is a collaborative Arctic energy project whose partners include Hilcorp Alaska, the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation, and BP, Alaska. The Liberty Partners have proposed the development of a gravel island in the shallow waters of the Beaufort Sea, a region where safe exploration and development dates back to the mid-1970’s.

Building upon many years of safe operations and proven technology used in previous Beaufort Sea offshore projects, the proposed nine acre site is similar to the four other artificial islands currently in operation (Spy Island, Northstar Island, Endicott Island, and Oooguruk Island).

Working closely with local communities, the Liberty Project partners have worked to meet to the rigorous standards of the review process.  BOEM deemed the Liberty Development and Production Plan (DPP) complete in 2015 and today’s draft EIS is an important next step in permitting development.

It’s estimated that the Liberty unit contains approximately 150 million barrels of recoverable, high-quality crude oil.
