The State newspaper reported (http://bit.ly/237158r) the Columbia utility says this request could be enough to finish the reactors at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station in Jenkinsville.
Critics say if the Public Service Commission approves the request, the utility's 700,000 customers will face more rate increases.
SCE&G says its contract with a new construction company essentially "fixes" the reactors' cost. Utility spokesman Eric Boomhower says the new contract limits the risk of future increases.
A state agency that represents the public must make a recommendation on the latest request by Sept. 1.
The new cost of the project is about $14 billion. The original estimate was about $10 billion.
