MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — New York state is providing $12 million in grants for the installation of permanent emergency generators at downstate gas stations.

A statement from Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the generators are needed to provide back-up power following major storms. Hundreds of gas stations were without power and customers waited on long lines for weeks at stations that did have power in the aftermath of 2012's Superstorm Sandy.

The program announced this week is expected to allow as many as 200 gas stations in the downstate region to acquire permanent emergency generators. The money comes from a federal hazard mitigation program.

A spokeswoman for the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority says about 600 gas stations have already acquired portable generators that can be used should power go out.
