Maine students to compete in wind turbine building contest

Hundreds of students are going to the University of Maine to design and build scale-model floating wind turbine platforms and pitch them to a panel of judges.

 

ORONO, Maine (AP) — Hundreds of students are going to the University of Maine to design and build scale-model floating wind turbine platforms and pitch them to a panel of judges.

The competition is part of the Windstorm Challenge and the 8th Annual Maine Wind Blade Challenge, held at the University of Maine Advanced Structures and Composites Center on Friday.

The two competitions are for middle- and high-school students. The winning team members of both competitions will be offered internships with the composites center if they enroll in the university.

The Windstorm Challenge includes the turbine platform competition. The wind blade challenge brings together teams of students with composites companies to construct functional sets of wind blades.

Composites center executive director Habib Dagher says the competitions will inspire future engineers, scientists and business leaders.
