SEATTLE (AP) — Hundreds of people are gathering at the site of two oil refineries near Anacortes to call for action on climate change.

The three-day event begins Friday and includes protesters in kayaks, community workshops and a three-mile march along the shores of Fidalgo Bay in front of the Tesoro and Shell refineries.

It's part of a series of global actions to "break free" from fossil fuels. Other events are scheduled in Los Angeles, Washington D.C. and Albany, New York.

In Washington state, organizers are targeting two refineries that are among the top sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the state. They say they want to transition to renewable energy in a way that doesn't leave workers or communities behind.

Officials with the refineries say they respect the right of people to demonstrate peacefully.
