SENECA, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say one unit of the Oconee Nuclear Station was shut down as a precaution after a transformer outside the plant caught fire.
Charlie King with Oconee Emergency Services' fire division says the fire was brought under control within 30 minutes.
Duke Energy said in a news release that the fire was initially classified as an unusual event around 3:20 p.m. That was upgraded to an alert shortly before 5 p.m. because the blaze damaged a power line in the station's switchyard.
Duke said the alert was lifted shortly after 8 p.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
