Consumers Energy says it's on track to close its seven oldest Michigan coal-fired power plants this spring.

JACKSON, Mich. (AP) — Consumers Energy says it's on track to close its seven oldest Michigan coal-fired power plants this spring.

The unit of Jackson-based CMS Energy Corp. says Monday that the "Classic Seven" plants will be shut down by April 15. They include B.C. Cobb units 4 and 5 in Muskegon, J.C. Weadock units 7 and 8 in Bay County's Hampton Township and J.R. Whiting units 1, 2 and 3 in Luna Pier.

The plants are capable of generating nearly 1,000 megawatts of electricity. Consumers Energy says power generated by the Jackson Gas Plant that it bought will replace power from the seven coal-fired plants and it plans to continue to invest in wind power and other renewable energy sources.

The shutdowns will leave Consumers Energy with five coal-fired plants in the state.
