Dominion Virginia Power is teaming up with a North Carolina energy company to create the largest solar farm in Hampton Roads.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) — Dominion Virginia Power is teaming up with a North Carolina energy company to create the largest solar farm in Hampton Roads.

Announced Monday, the partnership with SunEnergy1 will bring nearly 92,000 solar panels to a 250-acre leased site in Chesapeake. The farm will generate enough power for 5,000 homes.

The Chesapeake solar farm is among several other solar projects Dominion has launched in Hampton Roads. They include projects in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, among others.

Under the agreement in Chesapeake, Dominion will purchase the power from SunEnergy1 under a 20-year agreement. The Mooresville, North Carolina, solar power developer has installed more than 350 megawatts of solar facilities.

Virginia native and NASCAR star Denny Hamlin is an investor in the project.

Commercial operators are expected to begin later this year.
