Work at 1st U.S. offshore wind farm finishes for the season

Construction at the site of the nation's first offshore wind farm has finished for the season.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Construction at the site of the nation's first offshore wind farm has finished for the season.

Deepwater Wind is building a five-turbine wind farm off Block Island, Rhode Island.

Construction began in July.

The company said Tuesday that all five steel foundations have been installed and construction vessels have left the site.

Deepwater Wind CEO Jeffrey Grybowski says it was a season of firsts for the wind farm and the launch of a new U.S. offshore wind industry.

Work at the site will resume in the spring with the installation of the undersea cables, followed by the turbines themselves.

The wind farm did experience some safety and welding problems during initial construction.

The company expects the wind farm to be operational in the third quarter of 2016, powering 17,000 homes.
