The 1,346-megawatt (MW) Warren County Power Station also was named the Best Natural Gas-Fired Project at Power-Gen.

Dominion Virginia Power’s Warren County Power Station has been recognized as the Project of the Year at the Power-Gen International tradeshow and conference in Las Vegas. The project was designed and built by Warren County Energy Partners, a joint venture of Burns & McDonnell and Zachry Group.

The 1,346-megawatt (MW) Warren County Power Station also was named the Best Natural Gas-Fired Project at Power-Gen. Engineering design began in 2011 and the plant went into service in December 2014. Located near Front Royal, Virginia, the combined cycle power facility features a 3-on-1 configuration with Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Americas 501GAC combustion turbines, a 573-MW TC4F steam turbine and Alstom heat recovery steam generators.  The plant uses a thermal energy storage system and chillers from DN Tanks and Turbine Air Systems to reduce water use, store energy and reduce its parasitic power load during peak demand. The system helps increase power output by about 130 MW on a 92-degree day.

“Burns & McDonnell is proud to have played a role in delivering one of the cleanest and most efficient power generating plants in the country,’ said Rick Halil, senior vice president and general manager of Burns & McDonnell’s Energy group. “We congratulate Dominion for this well-deserved award for a generating asset that will be a crucial part of their portfolio for many years to come.”

The plant is a key part of Dominion’s generation resource portfolio in helping it meet a projected demand for 5,600 MW of new generation in its service area by 2019.
