Kauai's electric utility will dedicate the state's largest solar project this weekend.

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) — Kauai's electric utility will dedicate the state's largest solar project this weekend.

The Kauai Island Utility Cooperative will hold an open house after a dedication ceremony Saturday afternoon. Staff engineers will lead tours and explain how the facility's 59,000 panels provide electricity to the grid.

The utility says during daylight hours, the solar array will generate about 20 percent of the electricity used on Kauai.

The facility in Anahola came online this month.

The project includes a lithium ion energy storage system, which provides backup power when it's cloudy and the array is generating less electricity.

The utility says 37 percent of Kauai's electricity will come from renewable resources by the end of this year. That's up from 5 percent in 2009.
