A coalition of residents, environmental groups and Albany County has filed a notice that it intends to sue a fuel transportation company over expanded oil train traffic at the Port of Albany.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A coalition of residents, environmental groups and Albany County has filed a notice that it intends to sue a fuel transportation company over expanded oil train traffic at the Port of Albany.

The group claims Global Partners violated the federal Clean Air Act. The claim focuses on a state air pollution permit sought by the Waltham, Massachusetts-based company in 2011. Global Partners needed the permit from the Department of Environmental Conservation to expand petroleum shipments from 450 million gallons a year to 2.2 billion gallons.

Chris Amato of Earthjustice, which represents the coalition, says DEC wasn't in a position at the time to know Global would be handling Bakken crude, which is more volatile than other forms of crude oil.

Global Vice President Edward Faneuil said the company has complied with all state and federal regulations.
