WARREN, Ohio (AP) — Leaders of a northeast Ohio county are seeking a moratorium on new injection wells in the area until state lawmakers put reforms in place.

The Trumbull County commissioners passed a resolution Wednesday asking Gov. John Kasich for the ban in the county, which leads the state with 19 injection wells. The county has also proposed various reforms, including limiting the hours of operation for certain wells, creating buffer zones around well areas and requiring quarterly water testing.

The state approves sites for injection wells, which pump wastewater from oil and gas drilling deep inside the earth. Some such wells in Ohio have been linked to earthquakes.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports Shawn Bennett with the Ohio Oil and Gas Association says the state already has robust regulations on injection wells.
