Tulsa Fire Department Capt. Stan May says emergency crews worked for hours on Wednesday to contain and clear the asphalt oil. The liquid is stored at 800 degrees. It spilled onto the Creek Turnpike near Tulsa and ran down the grassy median.
May says responders cleared away as much of the oil as they could and will dig up contaminated dirt as needed.
A state trooper says 70-year-old Larry Crossland of Poteau passed out while driving the truck and that cable barriers prevented the semitrailer from traveling into oncoming traffic.
Crossland was flown to an area hospital in critical condition. Troopers say he has both external and internal injuries from the head down.
