McDonnell Group launches annual global utility evolution benchmarking study

McDonnell Group, the premier energy marketing and research agency, begins a global utility research study this month to shed light on the industry's preparedness to address change in the coming years.

The study, Utility Evolution Benchmarking 2014, aims to support the benchmarking needs of executives of electric and gas utilities with greater than $500 million in revenue. It builds upon several existing annual research studies that track trends and areas of utility executive concern. The McDonnell Group study takes those concepts further by including in-depth interviews and survey results on strategies and the progress of programs and implementations in response to key trends. The study findings will help utilities to understand key industry trends, emerging threats, and new business opportunities driven by accelerating changes in technology, regulation and energy capital markets.

The study, sponsored by software developer Autodesk, consists of scheduled one-on-one interviews to allow for greater discussion, as well as quantitative and qualitative insight around the strategic topics. McDonnell Group Principal Strategy Consultant Peter Manos said, "Together with our sponsoring partner Autodesk, we will share the insights produced by this study to help global utilities evolve ahead of the curve while balancing their mission to provide reliable and cost-effective service to end-customers and the delivery of consistent results to stakeholders at large."

The McDonnell Group research protocol ensures all individual company inputs and participant information are confidential and will not be shared or published. We will provide the final report to participants in Q4 2014 and then to the utility industry at large in 2015. The 2014 Utility Evolution Benchmarking Study will include North American and European utilities. McDonnell Group plans to expand the sample in 2015 to include Latin America and Asia.
