Meralco announces smart grid project

Meralco announces smart grid project The Philippines largest utility Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is investing in an advanced smart grid project that will include installing prepay smart meters to help the company's 5 million customers better manage their energy consumption and track energy bills more efficiently.

GE's Digital Energy business and smart grid solutions provider Trilliant are partnering with Meralco to develop the smart grid project. GE will provide the electric meters and system integration services. Trilliant's Smart Grid Communications Platform technology will also be installed.

"We are looking at the benefits of smart prepaid metering to deliver better service to our customers," said Alfredo Panlilio, head of customer retail services and corporate communications for Meralco. "This is the first phase of our long-term smart grid road map, which will eventually not only focus on prepaid metering, but also the modernization of our electric infrastructure, which will eventually deliver better customer experience, improved energy efficiency and enhanced reliability."

Matt McKenzie, general manager, Asia Pacific, GE Digital Energy, said the smart grid project "gives Meralco the capabilities to transform consumers' relationship with electricity." The smart meter upgrade will also reduce and minimize power outages.
