Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has received an order for core components of two sets of a 660 megawatt (MW) supercritical coal-fired boiler and steam turbine to be installed in two high-efficiency coal-fired power generation units, which Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd. (RRVUNL) is building at its Chhabra Thermal Power Station.

The power station is located in Chhabra, approximately 300 kilometers south-southwest from Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan state. The two generation units are slated to be sequentially put into commercial operation in 2016. The order was received through two joint venture companies established by MHI and Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T), India's largest construction company and heavy machinery manufacturer: L&T-MHI Boilers Private Limited (LMB) and L&T-MHI Turbine Generators Private Limited (LMTG).

LMB and LMTG are respectively responsible for the manufacture and supply of boilers and turbine generators for constrction of the project. MHI will manufacture the core components of the boilers and turbines, for boiler pressure parts and steam turbine rotors, and supply them to the two JV firms. Mitsubishi Electric Corporation will supply the core generator components to LMTG. Marubeni Corporation will handle trade particulars.

RRVUNL was launched in July 2000 when the Government of Rajasthan unbundled the Rajasthan State Electricity Board into five companies, including RRVUNL. Besides two units on fresh order, two other power generation units of 250 MW each, are currently under construction at the RRVUNL's Chhabra Thermal Power Plant to meet sharply increasing electricity demand in Rajasthan associated with India's robust economic growth.

Since their establishment in 2007, the two JVs with L&T have marked steady business expansion. To date, including the latest order from RRVUNL, MHI has received orders through the JVs for a total of 13 supercritical-pressure boilers for five power stations and 15 steam turbines for six sites.
