Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL) today announced the addition of IEC functionality as well as several other new features to the industry-leading SEL-735 Power Quality and Revenue Meter. IEC 61850 is an international standard for communication and integration that supports systems built from multivendor intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) networked to perform protection, monitoring, automation, metering, and control.
The new IEC 61850 features include:
- Up to 6 manufacturing message specification (MMS) client sessions for logging and reporting data
- The ability to publish and subscribe to Generic Object-Oriented Substation Event (GOOSE) messages for applications requiring fast peer-to-peer transfer of metering, power quality, or event data
- Support for device configuration using Substation Configuration Language (SCL) and Configured IED Description (CID) files for easy device setup
The SEL-735 also now includes support for instrument transformer compensation (ITC), which increases metering accuracy. Other enhancements include the addition of compensated and uncompensated registers to the transformer line-loss compensation (TLLC) feature, which simplifies site verification.
The SEL-735 is recognized as one of the most advanced power quality and revenue metering solutions available. It provides outstanding metering accuracy, exceeding IEC and ANSI accuracy class 0.2 requirements, which ensures precise revenue metering measurements. The SEL-735 Meter is also
IEC 61000-4-30 power quality compliant, providing accurate measurements—even in the presence of harmonics, out to the 63rd harmonic—to deliver a comprehensive power quality solution. SEL advanced metering systems meet or exceed the strictest ANSI, UL, and IEC requirements of utilities and industrial companies worldwide, offer a broad set of communications interfaces and protocols, operate from –40° to +85° C, and come with a ten-year, worldwide warranty.
The standard SEL-735 retails for $1,500 and includes waveform capture, harmonic measurements, and data logging, while also providing IEC and ANSI 0.2 accuracy class billing data. A fully optioned model, which includes high-order harmonics, faster sample rates, detailed power quality reports, Ethernet, and IEC 61850, is available for approximately $3,000. Customers will be able to upgrade the firmware in their existing Ethernet-equipped SEL-735 Meters to IEC 61850.
