Zpryme talks consumer engagement and the smart grid with Opower

With more than 85 utility partners, including eight of the ten largest utilities in the United States, Opower is utilizing behavioral science combined with big data analytics to help consumers save energy and money. Zpryme reached out to thought leader, Roderick Morris, Senior Vice President with Opower to discuss the importance of consumer engagement and education.

Q&A WITH OPOWER [Roderick Morris, Senior Vice President]

[ZP] How does Opower define the smart grid?

[OPOWER] The smart grid is providing utilities with data sets that are rapidly growing in size, which creates both new challenges and new opportunities. Utilities can use the data available to them to create value for customers in a number of ways – including new and more engaging energy consumption insights and targeted marketing programs. For example: With AMI data, a utility can disaggregate a customer’s energy usage into heating, cooling, base load and applications usage, and then compare that to the similar usage of other homes. Smart grid data also makes it possible for Opower to identify customers who can benefit from thermostat (HVAC disaggregation) and do not have a programmable thermostat, qualifying them for a utility rebate, marketing it to them and ultimately helping them take control. In order to do that at scale, and fully take advantage of the smart grid, you need to process many billions of data points. Opower is investing in scalable, high-performance and cost-effective infrastructure to analyze and unlock the value of big data provided through the smart grid.

[ZP] For those that are now familiar with Opower, can you please summarize your company’s value proposition?

[OPOWERWe provide customer engagement solutions to utilities based on the principals of behavioral science and big data analytics. Our customer engagement solutions help utilities work together with their consumer base to achieve improved energy efficiency, demand response, smart grid or rate adoption and increased customer satisfaction. By providing timely, personalized energy efficiency recommendations to utility customers through multiple channels, Opower is changing consumers’ relationships with utilities and helping to save energy.
