Bord na Móna to build new 5.6 MW waste-to-energy plant

Bord na Móna has announced plans for the development of a landfill gas-fueled power plant located at the Drehid landfill facility near Allenwood in County Kildare.

The Irish utility said the new waste-to-energy plant will utilize four GE (NYSE: GE) gas engines- each rated at 1.4 MW electrical output- to deliver 5.6 MW  of renewable power.

Construction is set to begin in late 2013 with operations set to commence in 2014. According to the announcement, the new facility will provide up to 25 jobs during construction and 3-4 permanent positions upon completion.

John Daly, Head of Resource Recovery Bord na Móna said, “This is a very exciting project for the company, that underlines how jobs and business activity in Bord na Móna can be directly supported by renewable energy projects. We are especially delighted to be able to announce more valuable employment opportunities within the communities that we have served for nearly eighty years.

Apart from the economic benefits, this energy project at Drehid will substantially reduce emissions of methane which is a potent greenhouse gas when released directly into the atmosphere. The entire project is in line with the goals outlined in the company’s New Contract with Nature, which continues to inform and guide everything we do within the company”.
