Entelios, EON partner on demand response in Germany

The success of Germany’s Energy Revolution substantially depends upon a smart optimization of power demand to guarantee the reliability of energy supply. European Smart Grid solution provider Entelios AG, in collaboration with E.ON has developed its first demand response product which is offered to German industrial and commercial customers. Among the first ones is the Harzwasserwerke GmbH, one of Germany’s top 10 water suppliers.

By aggregating the potential hidden in industrial and commercial sites that have large but flexible power consumption and onsite generation, demand response creates pools of flexibility (loads, generators, storage) that can reduce or increase consumption based on signals e.g. from the grid. With widespread introduction of fluctuating renewable generation such as wind and solar, actively managing the demand-side of the power market has become a necessity. Consumer loads and distributed generation must react in real time to the conditions of the grid and power market to ensure smooth and reliable operation of the power grid. From both economic and ecological perspective, demand response is the best suited solution to provide the required energy balance.

Entelios and E.ON are collaborating commercially on what up to now was pursued as technical pilot projects. The demand response product directly benefits all parties: industrial companies that deliver flexible power consumption to the power and balancing energy markets through demand response can net attractive revenues. Improved grid control can be achieved and additional renewable generation can be connected to minimizing the need for additional conventional reserve power plants, benefitting CO2 emissions and avoiding costs associated with new capacity buildup.

“We are delighted to be partnering with E.ON, one of the leading international power industry players, to deploy our proven concept for integrating the demand side in Germany together” said founder and CEO of Entelios AG Oliver Stahl.
