Alstom Renewable Power was selected by Energias do Brazil, to supply all electromechanical equipment to Cachoeira Caldeirão, a 220 MW hydropower plant. Energias do Brazil is a subsidiary of the Portuguese EDP Group, one of the largest operators in the European electricity sector.

Benefiting from a reservoir of around 50 km², it will be installed on the Araguari river, in Amapá State, in the northern region of Brazil. The plant should be fully operational in 2017. As part of the contract, Alstom Grid, one of the leaders in the Brazilian electricity transmission market, will also supply equipment for the plant’s internal substation. Alstom’s share of the contract is worth approximately €100 million, booked in fiscal year 2012/13.

This new hydropower plant is part of PAC 2 – a Brazilian program for growth acceleration, which will improve the country’s power generation capacity.

Alstom will supply three bulb generation units, gates, balance of plant, hydromechanical and erection equipment. This will be produced in Brazil, where the Group has one of its largest industrial units to serve the Brazilian hydro market, as well as to export equipment abroad. The hydromechanical and erection equipment will be produced in partnership with Bardella. The Cachoeira Caldeirão hydropower plant will be connected to the national grid through the Ferreira Gomes substation, with a 10km long 230kV transmission line.

“Alstom maximizes value for customers by providing complete and optimized power solutions. Alstom’s solutions increase the return on investment by generating more power as well as increasing the efficiency of the installation process and improving the flexibility of operations”,  said Marcos Costa, Country President of Alstom Brazil.
