Operators at Byron Generating Station manually shut down the Unit 2 reactor at 7:51 p.m. CDT Wednesday to address a main generator cooling pump malfunction. The generator and pump are on the non nuclear side of the plant.
The plant responded as expected and the shutdown was performed safely and without incident. Operators are investigating the cause of the pump malfunction.
Byron Unit 1 continues to operate at full power.
Byron Station is located in Ogle County, Ill., about 25 miles southwest of Rockford. With both units at full power, the site produces enough electricity for about 2.3 million homes.
