Greenpeace activist breached restricted areas at two Vattenfall owned nuclear power plants in Sweden on Tuesday, in an act they claim highlighted "serious safety deficiencies" at the sites.

Activists targeted the 3,560 MW Ringhals plant on the west coast and the 3,210 MW Forsmark facility north of Stockholm, which, combined, account for some 36% of power capacity in Sweden.

According to Vattenfall, police initially arrested 43 activists who had scaled the surrounding fence with ladders at the Forsmark and 16 more the at the Ringhals plant who cut holes in the outer fence.

A statement from Vattenfall said activist had only reached areas with a lower-safety classification and that "security worked exactly as intended." However, the Wall Street Journal has reported police located activists hiding in more sensitive areas at Forsmark during a more thorough search of the grounds some hours later.

"As police searched the area, two or three more activists were found hiding in a container in the area where the nuclear reactors are located," Claes Inge Andersson, spokesperson at the Forsmark plant was quoted.

"The hiding activists were found when the police searched the area, so security has worked as intended as far as we can judge, but we will of course conduct a thorough review of today's events," Andersson concluded.

Sweden’s Energy Minister, Lena Ek, was said to be unimpressed by the security at the two nuclear plants and emphasized safety at the facilities is the responsibility of the companies that operate them. Ek has in turn invited majority owner Vattenfall and minority-owner E.ON to discuss the matter at a special meeting on Wednesday.

There are currently 10 operating nuclear power stations in Sweden.
